Lilly History Image2

Eli Lilly is a global, research-based company that is nearly one and a half century old, established on May 10th 1876 by Colonel Eli Lilly in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States of America. At the age of 38, Col. Lilly was a pharmaceutical chemist and a veteran of the U.S. Civil War who had grown tired of the poorly prepared and ineffective medicines of his day. This pushed him to make the following commitments to himself and to society:

  • He would found a company that manufactures pharmaceutical products of the highest possible quality;
  • His company would develop only medicines that would be dispensed at the suggestion of the physicians rather than eloquent sideshow hucksters;
  • Lily pharmaceuticals would be based on the best science of the day.

Colonel Lilly enjoyed a flourishing business, but was not satisfied by the traditional methods of testing his products‘ quality. This resulted in him recruiting a young chemist to work as a full-time scientist, to use and improve on the latest techniques for quality evaluations. With his assistance, they both laid the foundation for the Lilly tradition: a dedication that first concentrated on the quality of existing products and later expanded to include the discovery and development of new and better pharmaceuticals.

Gradually, Colonel Lilly‘s son, Josiah K. Lilly Sr., as well as his two grandsons, Eli Lilly and Josiah K. Lilly Jr. contributed to the company, each serving as President with their respective distinct approaches to management. Altogether, their management styles established such a great corporate culture where Lilly employees were viewed as the company‘s most valuable assets, a belief that is still the cornerstone of our corporate philosophy.

Over the course of time, various medical breakthroughs have made Lilly a worldwide name in the pharmaceutical ring. Its devoted and hard-working employees have to be given due credit for discovering and developing these medical breakthroughs.

In 1979 Eli Lilly established its office in the South-East Asian region of Pakistan. Since then Eli Lilly has reached out to the Pakistani population by providing its medical antidotes to solve innumerable chronic diseases and ailments from osteoporosis to diabetes, and has continued to do so ever since keeping Col. Lilly‘s commitments in mind.
